Effective September 3, 2024, Colonel Dawn M. Johnson of Hutchinson, Kansas, was officially promoted to Brigadier General in the United States Army Reserve. BG Johnson currently serves as the Commander of the 143 Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in Orlando, Florida. Beginning in March 2024, Johnson commands the largest sustainment command in the United States Army Reserve, which includes more than 8,000 soldiers across 10 states.
Dr. Johnson, as she is widely known in the education community, serves as the Superintendent of Hutchinson Public Schools and has lived in Reno County since 1994.
Johnson’s army career began when she was 17 years old, when she enlisted while a senior at Dodge City High School. Johnson spent 3 years on active duty and has deployed four times while serving as an Army Reservist in 1996, 2002, 2003, and 2011. Her most recent accomplishment includes graduating with a second master’s degree from the prestigious Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy in Washington, D.C in 2020. Prior to her assignment in Florida, Johnson was the Chief of Staff for the 451st Sustainment Command (Exp) in Wichita, Kansas.
Johnson enjoyed a celebration on post in Florida with soldiers during her first official weekend as a Brigadier General after taking the oath of office earlier this month. To formally commemorate this esteemed achievement, Johnson plans to celebrate an official ceremony this fall with friends, family, and colleagues in Hutchinson.
