school lunch pirates find your treasure! october 14-18, 2024

HUTCHINSON, KS – October 15, 2024 – To recognize the National School Lunch Program, serving nearly 30 million children each day, Hutchinson Public schools will celebrate National School Lunch Week from October 14-18, 2024. The fun and creative campaign theme, “School Lunch Pirates: Find Your Treasure,” highlights the importance of a healthy school lunch to a student’s success both in and out of the classroom.

Research shows children are getting their healthiest meals at school. National School Lunch Week will highlight the nutritious foods available daily at USD 308 schools. The federally funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for 77 years. USD 308 Nutrition staff, a team of around 50 employees, served approximately 660,000 meals last school year. Summer meals, served free of charge and open to all Reno County children ages 0-18, were served at three locations in June, July and August. This past summer USD 308 staff served nearly 80,000 meals.

“School lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium,” said Jennifer Tatro, Director of Nutrition Services. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the wonderful benefits of our lunch program.”

Nutrition staff have prepared an on-theme menu including Pirate’s Peaches, Shipwreck Spaghetti, Golden Doubloon Corn, Buccaneer Beans, and more. Full menus, including printable options, can be found at www.usd308.com/nutrition.

The District recently announced updates to the Hutch app that include easier-to-find meal menus. Download the “Hutchinson Public Schools” app, select your school, then select dining.

The “School Lunch Pirates: Find Your Treasure” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association. Parents and students can follow the fun on social media using the hashtags #NSLW24, #SchoolLunchPirates and #SchoolLunch.
