Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College, and the Hutchinson Art Center are raising hunger awareness through art at the Empty Bowls fundraiser on Thursday, October 12th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Hutchinson Art Center located at 405 N. Washington Street.
“Hutchinson High School has been putting on an Empty Bowls event for the past 13 years. At Hutchinson High School we see hunger first hand as 65% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Without the basic need of food met, our students cannot learn,” says Julia Johnson, Art Teacher at Hutchinson High School. Three years ago, Hutch High, HutchCC and the Hutchinson Art Center joined together in their fight against hunger in the community. The bowls for sale the night of the event are hand-crafted by Hutch High and HutchCC art and ceramic students each year.
"HutchCC is honored to participate in the annual Empty Bowls event. Raising money for such a worthy cause helps our students connect to the multiple and meaningful ways in which the arts benefit the community," stated Kim Ivancovich, Ceramics Instructor and Fine Arts Department Co-chair. "I believe that by making a bowl by hand and giving a little bit of yourself to this endeavor, students become invested in making our town, our world, a little bit better. And have fun while doing it."
Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists and craftspeople in cities and towns around the world to raise money for food-related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities. Empty Bowls of Hutchinson supports the Reno County Food Bank. With a $10 donation, participants will receive a handmade bowl and a meal. On the menu this year is three-meat chili served as a Frito pie or with crackers prepared by the Traveling Bowl. The event is open to the public.
“This will be our third year doing this event. We love to see the community come out and support our students and the Reno County Food Bank. We enjoy supporting the community of Hutchinson, especially events for a good cause,” said Gina Emel, of The Traveling Bowl, located at 2221 N. Lorraine. Emel is co-owner of the Traveling Bowl along with partner Michael Cole.
Sponsors of the event this year are Bogey's Jr., Fee Insurance Group, Hickory Stik, Hubco Inc., Ken's Pizza, Legends Barbershop, R-B Drive-In, Redinger Agency Inc., and Smith's Market.
