Hutchinson, Kansas- Last night, the USD 308 Board of Education received a presentation from Kari Mailloux, Jordan Fee, and Christine John on a facility master plan. The facility committee has been meeting for 20 months, with smaller groups formed this summer to focus on middle school and early childhood solutions. Final findings were shared with the entire committee in October. The proposed bond is $109.5 million and addresses a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade attendance center, equity in elementary schools, and early learning. The discussion included remodeling and selling buildings, as well as community-focused solutions for athletics.

Most of the bond funding will be used for a new middle school at 23rd and Severance. As noted in the presentation, the district adopted a holistic approach for the building design, involving leaders from curriculum, athletics, special education, technology, and nutrition services, along with input from elementary and middle school administrators.

The middle school will feature a 6th grade wing, a grass football practice field, and a production kitchen. Don Michael Field will transform into a destination sports complex, with upgrades such as turf on the practice soccer field, enhanced spectator seating, improved press box facilities, and better parking options. These enhancements utilize existing district resources, significantly reducing the middle school's project costs compared to constructing a competition-grade football field on-site. The district recognizes the need for sports facilities within our district boundaries and is committed to working with the City of Hutchinson to accommodate all teams.

The anticipated bond vote date is set for April 1, 2025. At the next regularly scheduled meeting the board will adopt a resolution calling for the bond election and authorize the filing of an application with the State Board of Education.

The other item under Board Action was the creation of 2 Full Time Employees for English & Language Arts at Hutchinson High School, which also passed unanimously following a presentation from Deputy Superintendent Krystal Young. She spoke to the need of extending the ELA course offerings for 9th and 10th graders.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is November 25th, 6:00pm at the USD 308 Administration Center, 1520 N. Plum.
