Tom Kelly debate slated

Large number of debate trophiesThe Hutchinson High School debate team will host the 40th annual Tom Kelly invitational debate tournament on Oct. 13 and 14 at HHS. The tournament is named for Tom Kelly, a long-time Hutchinson debate coach. The tournament is a qualifier for the state’s Debate Coaches Invitational, which is held each January.

Rounds for the DCI qualifier are Friday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 14. Rounds for novice and open-division debaters are Saturday, Oct. 14.

The tournament will draw 172 debaters from 23 schools, including one high school from Iowa. The tournament is the largest cross-examination debate tournament in the country for the weekend of Oct. 13 through 15.

The topic for the 2017-18 debate season is “The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States.”
