Parents as Teachers is FREE to any parent with a child under 36 months of age who lives in the Hutchinson, Nickerson/South Hutchinson, or Buhler school districts.

What is Parents As Teachers?

Parents As Teachers is an early childhood parent education program for parents of children birth to 36 months. Parents as Teachers is funded by the Kansas State Department of Education and your local school district.

What is the Goal of Parents as Teachers?

The goal of the Parents as Teachers program is to assist parents in their role as the child's most important teacher. The program is designed to provide:

  • Practical and effective age appropriate information to promote the growth and development of infants and toddlers
  • Information to help parents form realistic expectations about their child's behavior

 

What services does Parents as Teachers provide?

Parents as Teachers provides the following services for you and your child:

  • Home Visits
  • Playgroups/Group Meetings
  • Developmental Screenings
  • Parent Resource Network
  • Lending Library

What is Parents As Teachers?
Parents As Teachers (PAT) is an early childhood parent education program for parents of children birth to 36 months.

Who is eligible for Parents As Teachers?
Any parent who resides within the USD 308, 309, & 313 School District's boundaries with a child between the ages of birth to three.

Is the program targeted to one special group?
No, the program is for all families of young children. Single parents, first-time parents, teen parents, and families with special concerns are given special attention.

What is the program cost to families?
PAT is free to all participating families.

If it is free to the families, who pays for the program?
The PAT program is supported by a grant from the Kansas State Department of Education and local school district funds.

Can older siblings attend playgroups?
Yes! Although they are designed for infants and toddlers, older children are more than welcome to attend the playgroups, just please keep in mind that parents must supervise all of the children that they bring to playgroup.

What is a Parent Educator?
A parent educator is a professional with an educational background and/or experience in early childhood education, child development, social work, psychology, or other related fields who is certified by the Parents As Teachers National Center. A Parent Educator must recertify yearly.

How often do Parent Educator's visit families in their homes?
Parent Educators visit families once a month or more, according to the families' needs.

Are there any materials parents are required to purchase if they participate?
No. Parent Educators will however give ideas of low-cost items that many households may already have on hand. We also have a lending library that is free to all families that has a wide range of child and parent materials. We also have packets, which are themed ranging from colors, a new baby, to potty training.
