Tell It Contest logoElementary students in USD 308 are being encouraged to participate in the annual Scharlotte Minnis Tell Us About It contest. The contest is a joint project of the Hutchinson Chapter of the NAACP and Hutchinson Community College.

The contest, itself, will be at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 18 in the Shears Technology Center on the HCC campus. Students are grouped in two age categories – Grades 1 through 3 and Grades 4 through 6.

Students are asked to select an African-American who has made contributions in one of the following categories – education, politics, medicine, inventions, art, athletics, visual arts and performing arts. First place winners get a $50 gift card, while second place get a gift card valued at $35 and third place receives a $25 gift card. Also sponsoring the contest is the Bell Credit Union, Hutchinson Government Employees Credit Union and Central Kansas Credit Union.

Students will put together a poster on their selected African-American leader and make a three-minute presentation on the person.

In addition to having students perform in the contest on Feb. 18, each elementary school will have one grade level put together Black History Month presentations to be presented in their schools. Students who make these presentations are encouraged also to enter in the Feb. 18 contest.
