Letter to our parents on COVID-19 precautions

Below is a letter we've shared with our parents.

March 12, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The safety, health, and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. We want to share basic facts with you and what the district is doing at this point to keep your family healthier.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Confirmation can only be done with a specialized respiratory test. According to KDHE there are four confirmed cases in Kansas.

We have an exceptional team at Hutchinson USD 308 that is already taking actions to keep our students and staff safe. Custodians utilize cleaning products that kill a wide range of germs. Nurses work with community partners, track illnesses, and monitor staff and students daily. Buses are disinfected daily. Administration is working closely with the Reno County Health Department and other state and local agencies, and will continue to monitor the progression of COVID-19.

We firmly believe students belong in school. Staff and students are encouraged to wash their hands frequently; cover their cough; avoid touching eyes, mouth, and nose; clean frequently touched objects and surfaces; and avoid others if they are sick.

With Spring Break fast approaching, these preventative measures are especially important. If you travel out of state or country, please be extra observant of any symptoms that may surface. If symptoms occur, contact a health care provider. All four known Kansas confirmed cases resulted from out-of-state travel.

One reminder, whether we are talking about Influenza A or B or COVID-19, district policy requires that a student be fever-free for 24 hours without any fever-reducing medications before returning to school.

If you have additional questions regarding your student, please reach out to your student’s school. Please watch your email for any updates.

Sincerely,

Mike Folks

USD 308 Superintendent
