A Salthawk alumni has returned home to coach baseball.
Jim Preston was named Hutchinson High School head baseball coach for the 2016-17 school year. Preston is a 1974 graduate of HHS.
A long-time Rule 10 coach, Preston has been head coach at Inman High School the past six years. He also has been the Prairie Hills Middle School boys’ head basketball coach for the past 12 years. Shortly after he graduated from college, served as an assistant baseball coach at Hutchinson Community College in 1979-80.
For the past quarter century, Preston has worked for the Training and Evaluation Center of Hutchinson where he serves as the vice president of business and finance. In Kansas, Rule 10 coaches are community members who work outside education but coach KSHSAA-approved sports and activities.
“I hope to be competitive,” Preston said Thursday. “I want kids to play hard-nosed baseball and hustle.”
While at Inman, Preston’s teams advanced to the Class 2A-1A state baseball tournament in 2013 and 2015. His teams have been second in the regional baseball tournament in 2016, 2014 and 2012.
“Obviously we are excited and feel really fortunate to have someone of his background take over the program,” said Kevin Armstrong, HHS athletic director.
Preston replaces Adam Krol who stepped down after the 2015-16 season.
