The wintertime flu blues

Illness flowchart

A note from your school nurse:

We’re in what normally is peak season for real influenza – the virus-driven illness that makes you feel like you’ve been run over by a big truck. We’re also at a time of year when we see tummy ailments that include vomiting and diarrhea. The tummy ailments can be life threatening as well if a child becomes too dehydrated.

Please work with your physician if you suspect influenza, a stomach bug or other illness. State regulations require a student to stay home from school for seven days if they have tested positive for influenza. Use of an anti-viral medication won’t reduce that seven-day period.

For our part, we are stepping up our cleaning processes in the buildings. We have additional bug-killing tools we use when we see more illnesses.

We’ve put together this chart to provide guidance about how we react to fevers, and how you can help us when illness is suspected at home. Click here for a printable version.
