HHS debaters place in Class 6A State

Congratulation to the Hutchinson High School debate team of junior Seamus Wamsley and sophomore Kian Williams on ending their debate season in the sweet 16 of the Class 6A KSHSAA Two-Speaker State Debate Championship Tournament held in Garden City High School this weekend.

Wamsley and Williams had a preliminary record of 4 wins and 2 losses, which advanced them to the double octo-finals, in which they defeated Olathe North on a 3-0 decision. Seamus and Wamsley eventually placed 9th, losing to Shawnee Mission West in the oct-finals who was the 2nd seed at the tournament.

This year’s 2-speaker state debate tournament featured 83 teams competing from 26 schools. To qualify for the tournament, students must have over a 50 percent win/loss record at 4 or more invitational tournaments above the novice level. This year the Hutch High Debate Team qualified 6 students to the state tournament including sophomores Jacob Unruh/Adriana Owens who also competed, and sophomore Jadyn Miller and junior Jenna Ramsey who did not compete.
