Week of the Young Child

Children- and family-friendly activities are at the core of the annual Week of the Young Child celebration in Reno County. Week of the Young Child begins April 15.

While there will be events all week, the celebration hits a high note during Hutchinson’s Third Thursday on April 19.

Events for the week include:

Sunday, April 15

  • Explore the prairie dog tunnel, dinosaur dig, reptile and amphibian exhibit, and enjoy a free train ride on the Prairie Thunder Railroad from 2 to 4 p.m.

Monday, April 16

  • Little Makers in Makerspace at ESSSDAK in the Hutchinson Mall from 5 to 7 p.m.

Tuesday, April 17

  • Storytelling at the Hutchinson Public Library, 9th and Main, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 18

  • Parents As Teachers Playgroup at the Hutcherson Center, 330 Charles St., from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Pondering Ponds at the Dillon Nature Center, 3002 E. 30th Ave., 3:30 to 6 p.m. Families are invited to spend some time outdoors at the Nature Center and explore the wonders of pond life.

Thursday, April 19, Third Thursday in Downtown Hutchinson

  • Touch A Truck, all evening at Avenue A and Walnut. Little ones will be able to have a hands-on experience with safety, medical and other community helpers.
  • Family Community Theatre Children’s Academy presents Enchanted Fairytales in the Large Gazebo at Avenue A Park on the half hour, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the last one starting at 6:30 p.m. Poetry in Motion dancers will perform a 15-minute routine between presentations.
  • Infant Massage and Toddler Yoga will be from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 7 p.m. for children from birth to age 3 at TECH ALS, 14 W. Avenue B.
  • Create a watercolor monster at Lit Studios in the Avenue A Park on the east side of Main Street.
  • Information booths throughout downtown Hutchinson from local early childhood programs.
  • Hutchinson Kennel Club therapy dogs will be downtown during the evening.
