During November and December, district schools and community groups ramp up efforts to help families in Hutchinson and beyond during the Christmas season. This year, the district decided to sample what our schools are doing, and what community groups are doing for our families.

Square dancing returns to HHS

HHS square dancingIf you are a Salthawk alumnus from the past 40 years or longer, you remember one thing about the holidays at Hutchinson High School. The tradition has little to do with snow men, reindeer or other symbols of the winter holidays.

Instead, the tradition is something that speaks to our Kansas heritage – square dancing.

HHS SingersOne of the largest musical events of the year begins at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Hutchinson High School. The Hutchinson High School Christmas Concert features hundreds of student musicians from the high school.

Lunch ladies organize food drive

H Hawk LogoThanks to the cafeteria staff at Hutchinson High School, the Battle of the Classes for 2017 will be to gather food for students in need.

Items needed are canned fruit, canned vegetables, granola bars, tuna, and macaroni and cheese. Students can drop off items to any of the HHS “lunch ladies” on Monday, Dec. 11, through Wednesday, Dec. 13, in the cafeteria. Students dropping off a food item will receive a free treat.

USD 308 benefits from several Fund for Hutchinson grants

Hutchinson Public Schools benefitted directly and indirectly from several grants announced Thursday by the Hutchinson Community Foundation’s Fund for Hutchinson grants. The funding were made during the annual grant ceremony at the Cosmosphere.

HHS students qualify for honor music groups

Hutchinson High School will be well represented in the South Central Kansas Music Educators Association’s honor groups this fall.

HHS had two honor band members, six honor orchestra members, five honor mixed choir and two honor women’s choir.

The band, orchestra and vocal music performances will be held Dec. 2 at Wichita East High School. Qualifiers are below.

Delgado, Rodriguez named royalty

King Delgado and Queen RodriguezValetin Delgado and Kyra Rodriguez were named Homecoming royalty for fall 2017 at Hutchinson High School. Delgado was crowned king prior to Friday’s HHS vs. Salina South football game and Rodriguez was crowned queen at halftime.

Other finalists for king were Zane Allender, Joesiah Galindo, Tre Vaughn Jones, Max Ontjes and Brody Smith. Other finalists for queen were Mariah Cannon, Carson Cox, Ally Lusk, Grace Scott and Raegan Wessel.

Wessel tabbed as student athlete of the month

Hutchinson High School senior Raegan Wessel is the Reno County State Farm Student Athlete of the Month for September. Raegan received her plaque Friday from Hutchinson State Farm Agent Brandon Meyer.

Raegan, daughter of Tasha and Bob Wessel, currently participates in tennis and soccer as well as the Salthawk Marching Band. She also played basketball as a freshman and sophomore. 

Teachers nominated for ECET2-Kansas

Nine USD 308 teachers have been nominated to attend the second annual ECET2Kansas conference in November at Overland Park.

ECET2 stands for Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teaching and Teachers. The goal of the conference is to help teachers grow, collaborate and lead.

Nominated to attend from Hutchinson are Kristi Link, Jesse Ediger, Rachel Hill, Kris Jenkins, Heather Ramos, Jessica Self, Jaime Tilton, Ashleigh Vieyra and Megan Yoder.

HHS Wall of Honor inducts three

The 19th class of the Wall of Honor at Hutchinson High School features a trio of HHS alumni.

The 2017-18 honorees are Dr. Rick Bright, class of 1984; Sean James, class of 1987; and Dr. Susan Killian Myers, class of 1973.
